What happens during a roof tearoff?

During a roof tearoff, the existing materials that make up the roof of your home or commercial building are removed. How this is done will depend on the type of shingle or other material makes up the outer layer of your roof. Shingles and the protective underlayment are typically removed by hand with shovels. Tearing off the roof makes up a large portion of the expense of replacing a roof since it must be done by hand in order to preserve the underlying wood.

What is the advantage of doing a roof tearoff instead of a roof recover?

The only way to know what condition your roof is really in is to remove all of the outer layers of materials. Oftentimes we remove layers of shingle and protective underlayment only to find spongy or rotting wood from years of moisture buildup and shingle failure. Once the roofing materials has been removed, sections of the underlying wood can easily be replaced before re-roofing the building.
