What is the advantage of a roof recover?
When replacing a roof, the most time and labor intensive part is often the roof tearoff process. Since the underlying wood must be preserved for recovering, shingles and moisture barrier must be removed by hand. If your roof is simply worn, and otherwise in good shape, it may be possible to simply cover over the existing shingles with new moisture barrier and shingles. This process, known as a roof recover, is less expensive and faster than total roof replacement.
Can I recover my roof instead of replacing it?
One of the biggest reasons why people choose to recover their roof rather than replace it is cost. Recovering an existing roof costs less than replacing it simply because there are less labor and disposal costs involved. However, a roof recover is only possible if there is a single layer of shingles on the existing roof. The roof must also be in good working order without any visible defects, leaks or questionable areas. Since the only way to see the extent of the damage caused by a natural disaster or other calamity is to tear off the roof completely, a roof recover is usually not recommended when there is damage to an existing roof. It is also important to note that, should you choose to recover your roof rather than replace it, the recovery process can only happen once.
