Metal Roofing Options
Once reserved for barns, garages, sheds, and businesses, metal roofing is an increasingly popular choice for homeowners throughout the Portland area. While many people think of metal roofs as sheets of silver metal, a variety of materials, styles and colors are available.
Aluminum
Aluminum roof shingles are a great choice for damp environments where rust may be a problem. They are also very malleable so they can be shaped into shingles as well as shakes. Aluminum shingles tend to come pre-painted in a variety of colors. They are also lightweight and energy efficient since they reflect the sun’s energy rather than absorb it the way asphalt shingles do. They are also made from recycled materials making them an environmentally alternative to traditional shingles.
Galvanized Steel
Strong and lower in cost than aluminum shingles, galvanized steel roofs are heavy and often do not weather well in coastal areas where there is a lot of salt in the air. However, galvanized steel shingles come in a variety of textures and shapes and offer the same appearance as their aluminum counterparts.
Copper
The most expensive option of the three, copper is rarely used to cover an entire roof but can create beautiful accents on your home. When allowed to weather for 8-10 years, copper turns a beautiful blue-green color and can last up to 100 years on a building.

Advantages of Metal Roofing
One of the biggest advantages to a metal roof is durability. When properly installed, a metal roof can last anywhere from 40 to 100 years. Metal roofs are also virtually maintenance free. Painted aluminum may need to be repainted periodically, to keep its original lustre but most roofs simply need to be examined for scratches, rust, grease, or dirt. At most, your roof may need periodic washing with a mild detergent and a plain garden hose. Metal roofs are also fire resistant and energy efficient. Rather than absorbing the sun’s rays the way asphalt shingles do, metal roofs reflect energy from the sun.

Can a metal roof be repainted?
It has been said that the easiest way to freshen up a room is with a coat of paint. Your metal roof is no exception. A galvanized steel or aluminum roof can be painted using the right tools and expertise. Fortunately, Titan Construction has both. The roof is first power washed to remove oils, dirt, mildew, and mold that might keep the paint from adhering to the metal. Next, the roof is primed to prepare it for paint. Finally, two coats of industrial paint are applied as well as a top coat which inhibits rust. Your roof can look as good as new in as little as two days with Titan Construction’s metal roof repainting services.
